Stuff You Don't Know About Hardcore Radiohead Fans

Stuff you don’t know about Hardcore Radiohead fans...

  1. THEY ROLL THEIR EYES WHEN YOU MENTION “CREEP.” When you tell a hardcore Radiohead fan that you know that “Creep” song, they are trying really hard not to roll their eyes at you.  You see, we actually do like “Creep,” but, it was a song from Pablo Honey, which is widely considered Radiohead’s freshman album.  When you say that, you are telling us that you have not listened to their many other songs that are much better and highly revered.  “Creep” is the standard issue Radiohead song.  It’s like saying your favorite pizza is cheese when there are so many toppings you are missing out on.
  2. FANS HAVE AN ODD SENSE OF HUMOR.  I belong to a meme page for Radiohead fans, and making fun of our favorite band is actually acceptable, in certain terms.  I mean, your jokes need to be funny, thoughtful, and relevant.  It’s not a page for people to just tear down the band.
  3. HARDCORE FANS ARE UNDERGROUND.  Many fans (like myself) are willing to go to great lengths to get the best tickets and hear the music first.  There is an underground scene for Radiohead fans.  Am I willing to give up my secrets?  Um no.
  4. FANS DISAGREE ON WHAT IS THE BEST RADIOHEAD MUSIC.  Fans engage in meaningless (usually online) debates over what songs are better than others and what albums are better.  There really is no point in it, because everyone has their faves.  But, I guess it’s a great way to pass the time.  In the end, most hardcore fans are into just about all the songs and albums.  The one exception to this is Pablo Honey.  While many of us have listened to Pablo Honey, most fans will list it as a least favorite album or not mention it at all.  It’s not a bad album, but it’s just not a seasoned Radiohead album.  I still really like some of the songs on Pablo Honey.
  5. FANS MAY BE JUDGING YOU AT RADIOHEAD CONCERTS.  If you are able to get Radiohead tickets, do yourself a favor and learn their music.  Radiohead fans will be secretly judging you at the shows if you don’t know any lyrics, or if you look lost, like you don’t belong there.  It’s true.  If you don’t know the music, but still want to blend in, wear something dark.  Don’t dress up in your fancy, cutesy clothes.  You don’t need to overly hipster-fy your look; a simple black t-shirt and jeans will blend you with the crowd.
  6. RADIOHEAD FANS WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT THEY LOVE RADIOHEAD.  Radiohead fans are kind of like vegans, in that, they will probably let you know they are fans.  “Yes, I am a Radiohead fan.  Thank you very much.”  If you run into this topic with a fan and you don’t have much Radiohead knowledge, just change the subject.  PLEASE, PLEASE, WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T SAY YOU LIKE “CREEP.”
  7. FANS ARE HELPFUL TO NEWBIES.  If you are interested in trying out some Radiohead music, most fans will do whatever they can to help you.  Even though they view Radiohead fandom as some sort-of an elitist pursuit, they also really want EVERYONE to know how good the band is.  I was on a thread in a group where someone asked what to listen to to “get into Radiohead.”  The fans were happy to help.
  8. HARDCORE FANS ARE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.  Hardcore Radiohead fans may not be noticeable in your city, but they are a worldwide phenomenon.  That’s right.  In the Radiohead fan groups I am in, there are lots of international fans.  Radiohead fandom is definitely NOT an American or British thing.  There are people all over begging for Radiohead to tour their country.
  9. HARDCORE FANS CAN SPOT A FAKE.  When it come to Radiohead, if you aren’t in the know, it’s only excusable if you are forthcoming with it.  We can still be friends, though.  Be yourself, and we can help you along the journey, if you believe Radiohead fandom is right for you.  Just don’t be a poser, because the fans won’t buy it.
  10. Bonus Post Script: Some people don’t “get” Radiohead.  I truly believe that there is at least 1 (or 5) Radiohead songs for each person.  if you don’t “get’ them, you haven’t found your songs yet.  But, here’s the reality of it… there are some people out there that just will never get into anything that doesn’t fit into the norm.  This is the reason why Radiohead is not for everyone.

Here's my personal list of live tour dates from my Twitter.  I'm a huge fan of Radiohead, and also a family vlogger with 7 kids.  Check out our vlogs on YouTube here: BANANA SPLITS VLOGS - Six kids & expecting! - YouTube
